MISL-style indoor soccer was introduced to the American public in 1978 as a high-powered, fast-paced game. For the un-indoctrinated, it has repeatedly been compared to "pinball on steroids." The MISL began as a six-team league with charter franchises in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston, New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and began play on December 22, 1978 when the New York Arrows defeated the Cincinnati Kids, 7-2, in front of 10,386 new fans at the Nassau Coliseum. During the next few years expansion franchises were granted, sellouts were the norm and by the start of the 1982-83 season, the MISL was operating as a coast-to-coast league with 14 teams that stretched from Baltimore to Los Angeles.
Now, 33 years later, indoor soccer remains one of the fastest, most action-packed fan-friendly professional sports in the country. The 2011 MISL Championship Game between the Milwaukee Wave and Baltimore Blast was played in front of a near sellout crowd of more than 10,000 fans. The Major Indoor Soccer League has always, and will always, strive to provide family-friendly affordable entertainment throughout North America. Every MISL team works hard to become a stronghold in the community, with school programs, summer soccer camps and player appearances and the league, the teams and the players are dedicated to the growth of soccer, from the youth leagues to the professional game. The Norfolk SharX will be a welcomed asset to both the Hampton Roads sports scene and the overall community.

Comets Sign Two - Kante, Harris
With the MISL season fast approaching the player signings have already started with the Missouri Comets as they announced their first signings of the 2011 offseason today.
Ibrahim Kante and Brian Harris have both agreed to contracts with the team, Kante for one year and Harris for two.
Ibrahim Kante (Ee-Brah-Heem Kahn-Tay) Drafted by the New England Revolution in 2003, the 6’3” defender originally hails from the country of Mali. 2010-2011 saw him battle through an injury-plagued season with the Omaha Vipers, only starting ten games. Fully recovered, he is excited to take the Comets to the next level in 2011-2012.
“I’m thrilled to continue to play at the top of professional indoor soccer in this country. Not very many people get the chance to play at this level. I am excited to play for a first-class organization like the Comets. I can’t wait to play in front of the fans and in front of my family.” Kante’s brother, Daouda Kante is currently the Technical Director of one of Kansas City’s largest youth clubs, Kansas Rush.
“Ibrahim’s size and skills are exactly what we need to solidify the defense this season,” says head coach Kim Roentved, “In addition to his on-field presence; he brings a leadership quality that fits perfectly into our team chemistry.”
Brian Harris- Harris first endeared himself to fans as the hard-hitting, scrappy defender who never backed down from a challenge. He cemented his reputation as a fan favorite when he befriended cancer-survivor Dalton Burner. Harris immediately joined forces with the Dalton Burner Foundation to raise funds for cancer research and to aide cancer patients after meeting the inspiring Burner before a Comets game last season. His on-field play earned him recognition from the entire league as he was named to the MISL All-Rookie team.
Coach Roentved thinks his future is very bright, “We expect a big year out of Brian, his sophomore year in the league should really make a big difference as far as speed of play.” “It’s an honor to play for the Comets and Coach Roentved” says Harris, “I am looking forward to a great year and I’m very excited about the future of this team.”

Syracuse to Reveal Team Name Today
A few months ago we reported that Syracuse would be again the home of a professional indoor soccer franchise. There was at the time no official statement as to what the team would be named or even an official team website which led to our research and speculations.
Today the blog Syracuse.com is reporting that all the unknowns should be answered today. This is a very exciting year for soccer fans in Syracuse who have not had an indoor team since the former Scorpions of the American Soccer League folded for the last time in 1974.
The new team (whatever they will be called) will be part of the MISL which has seen some growth since the end last season and will now consist of the following teams: Syracuse, the Rochester Lancers, Baltimore Blast, Milwaukee Wave, Missouri Comets, Wichita Wings and Norfolk SharX.
Stay tuned for more exciting Professional Indoor Soccer news as the 2011-2012 seasons quickly approach!

Norfolk SharX Team up with Sentara
The nearly six dozen professional and PRO/AM soccer players of the Norfolk SharX and Virginia Beach Piranhas are under the watchful eyes of Sentara Sports Medicine experts during practice and games. The players benefit from the professional expertise of a team of physical therapists, exercise physiologists, certified athletic trainers, registered dieticians, a network of primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, imaging experts and emergency care physicians.
"We are thrilled to have this depth of sports medicine and athletic training expertise through Sentara Sports Medicine. Sentara offers complete sports medicine care for our athletes from injury prevention and immediate sideline assessments to imaging and treatment," says Marcie Laumann, president and general manager, Virginia Beach Piranhas and Norfolk SharX Pro Soccer. "Additionally, since Sentara's dedication to the area and corporate values are so similar to our own, we're very proud to have them as community partners and love sharing with our fans about their medical expertise and professional excellence."
"This represents the perfect collaboration between two organizations who believe in the health benefits of athletics, said Alan Wilson. "Our goal is to help the SharX and Piranhas maximize their competitive advantage and fitness while encouraging other area young adults and children to consider healthy lifestyles." "We have complete confidence in Sentara athletic training and rehabilitation services and appreciate the network of sports medicine experts exactly where we play-in Norfolk and at the new Sentara Princess Anne health campus," added Laumann.
The Virginia Beach Piranhas and Norfolk SharX are very active in the Hampton Roads community. The teams visit area schools to promote the "Healthy Choices" program designed to educate students about the long-term benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.
The Virginia Beach Piranhas are represented by two United Soccer League (USL) teams, the Women's team and the Men's PDL team, with home games played in the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The Piranhas are currently in season, with league playoffs beginning the first week of August.
